Park City’s Olympic Legacy

January 30th, 2017 | Park City Community

For the first century of its existence, Park City was a rough and tumble mining town. Like so many other mining towns in the west, it essentially became a ghost town after the mines went dry in the mid-1900’s. Thanks to a handful of individuals, skiing was introduced and their hard work saved the community. Then came the 2002 Olympics. The world experienced our mountain hamlet of pristine beauty and financial possibility, and Park City’s bright future took off like a rocket. Today Park City is renowned as a premier destination for not only winter sports enthusiasts, but also Olympic athletes to train and perfect their sport. Thanks to commitment and business acumen of Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation, the passion and excitement the Olympic Games sparked 15 years ago lives on in Park City, burning bright for future generations to be inspired by.

Utah Olympic Park

Utah Olympic Park is one of Park City’s most noble monuments. Perched on the mountainside across from Kimball Junction, the Nordic ski jumps watch over our town like an athletic Statue of Liberty. While the jumps are the most noticeable feature, it is only one of many attractions the Park offers to visitors. International competitions, first-hand thrilling athletic experiences, and a one-of-a-kind museum of winter sport draw tens of thousands of people every year.

For the Adventurer

Utah Olympic Park offers one of the steepest ziplines in the world, propelling riders up to 50 miles per hour, all while swinging their feet at nearly 70 feet above the ground. If that’s not fast enough, patrons have the opportunity to scream down the ice track in the Park’s Winter Comet Bobsled. True to its name, riders buzz at speeds of 75 miles per hour and forces of 5 G’s. If speed isn’t your cup of tea, then perhaps the Park’s rope courses would be more up your alley. Offering varying levels of difficulty and heights, the whole family can enjoy the physical challenge and tummy-tickling thrill these mini-adventures ensure.

For the Spectator

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the 2002 Olympics, and the Utah Olympic Park is hosting a variety of events to celebrate the occasion. Over 750 athletes from 40 nations will compete in a variety of winter sports to honor the height of human drive and passion the Olympics embody. The first 500 attendees will receive a $20.02 voucher, (get it? 2002? so clever!) redeemable at any Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation location.
