♬ Shop! In the name of love …♪

November 27th, 2017 | Park City Community

The 2017 holiday season is officially here and it’s time to go shopping! Park City’s retail scene has grown exponentially over the past few years, which not only boosts our local economy, but also makes taking care of everyone on your gift list easier. Still, even the most enthusiastic shopper can start to feel their spirit sagging after a day surrounded by crowds and racking up charges. We’d like to suggest four ways to alleviate your retail blues this time of year.

  1. Giving that makes a difference
Instead of buying gifts for people who already have abundance in their lives, make a donation in their name to your favorite charity. “My personal favorite non-profit for this our local women’s shelter, Peace House,” said Ann MacQuoid. “I make a donation online, then send a card to the person or family I would have bought a gift for. I let them know that instead owning another thingamajig they really don’t need, they’ve made a difference in our community and in the lives of a whole family who is less fortunate. Time and time again, I’ve had friends and family tell me how good it made them feel to know they received and gave, all at the same time.

  1. Buy from those who give back
If you shop online, buy from companies who give back. Google “companies that give back,” you’ll find several lists of retailers who have contributing to good causes as part of their mission. “Amazon Smile has transformed the holidays for me,” said Steve Chin. “This is Amazon’s extraordinary effort to support nonprofits, both local and national. Now I can simultaneously buy exactly what my family wants for gifts, and support charity. It doesn’t get better than that!”

III. Support artists
Check out holiday craft fairs around town. “I’m encouraging everyone to attend Park Silly’s Holiday Bazaar held on December 1st – 3rd,” said Dena Fleming. “Dozens of local craftspeople are selling handmade, one-of-a-kind goods. There’s nothing not to love about this event – there’s no entrance fee, we’re directly supporting our neighbor’s entrepreneurial efforts, and we’re buying our loved ones gifts they’ll truly appreciate.”

  1. Buy local
Whenever you can, buy from small, local retailers. Studies have confirmed that money spent in stores owned and operated by people who live in Park City benefits our local community far more then the initial transaction – it acts like ripples in a pond and spreads the wealth exponentially.  “I could spend all day toy shopping at J.W. Allen & Sons,” said Suzanne Harris. “This magical toy shop is locally owned and operated by the Allen family. It’s takes me back to my own childhood every time I step through the door, filling me with the excitement and awe of the season.”

We at Chin-MacQuoid-Fleming-Harris join you in raising our hearts and glasses to ring in this holiday season. We’re wishing you all the joys of giving and receiving in any form it takes, but hope our suggestions will send your own imagination soaring about ways to spread the love.
