Shop local, connect with community at Utah farmers markets

May 17th, 2022 | Park City Community

“Farmers market season” kicks off in Park City this Wednesday and it’s a great time to take advantage of fresh, seasonal, local produce without breaking the bank. As spring winds down, expect to find an array of Utah-grown produce likely available in May including asparagus, fava beans, green garlic, mint, mushrooms, peas, radishes, rhubarb and spinach.

But just as much as farmers markets are a chance to stock up on local offerings, they also are an opportunity to connect with community, as markets pride themselves on being a welcoming gathering place. With multiple options for lunch, sweet treats and live music, markets are the perfect place to meet up with friends and catch up on the week’s happenings.

What makes fruits and vegetables from farmers markets so special is that they’re picked at the peak of the growing season, meaning produce is at its freshest and tastes the best. But market offerings extend well beyond produce to local meats, cheeses, flowers, sauces, salsas and more. Shopping at farmers markets also supports your local farmers and food artisans and keeps the money you spend on food closer to your neighborhood.

What’s more, markets not only support local farmers, but also they offer a prime opportunity to learn tips, tricks and options for storing, cooking and maximizing your produce directly from farmers. Farmers often love to share their favorite recipes or best ways to prepare their products.

While markets aren’t necessarily a one-stop shop for all your grocery needs, with four farmers markets in and around Park City, their convenience, low pricing and opportunity to support the community make them essential additions to your weekly routine! Downtown (Salt Lake City) Farmers Market

The Downtown Farmers Market in Salt Lake City will celebrate its 31st year as a beloved summer tradition for residents and visitors. Their motto of “Make it, bake it, grow it,” draws vendors that have passion and pride for the products they bring to market. Salt Lake actually hosts two weekly markets: Saturdays at Pioneer Park(350 West 300 South) from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. beginning June 4, and Thursdays at Liberty Park (680 East 1040 South) from 4 p.m. to dusk beginning June 16 and running through Sept. 29.

Farmers and producers offer the freshest local fruits and vegetables as well as a wide variety of grass-fed meats, eggs, dairy, honey and flora, along with the region’s best locally made sauces, spreads, baked goods and culinary accoutrements. The Downtown Farmers Market, created in 1992 by the Downtown Alliance to introduce positive activities to Pioneer Park, offers a vendor mix that represents more than 100 farms and ranches from within 250 miles of Salt Lake City and includes sellers from 16 counties in Utah.

In addition to farm goods, check out the handmade, locally produced food, beverages and crafts. Established in 2003, the Downtown Art & Craft Market runs adjacent to the Farmers Market in Pioneer Park and celebrates unique, handmade, local gifts and art.

The Downtown Farmers Market and its supporting programming is presented by the Downtown Alliance and its sponsors, including Urban Food Connections of Utah, which focuses on educating the community about local food, regional producers and Utah’s proud agricultural heritage.
