Our Favorite Park City Winter Activities

Winter in Park City is about more than just skiing. Of course, if you’re an avid skier, this is the place you want to be, but even if you don’t like skiing, there’s definitely something here that will pique your interest in the winter months.

Whether you’re looking for a different way to enjoy the snow or you’re in the mood for some culture and a night out, here are some of our favorite Park City, Utah Winter Activities.

Skiing, but there’s More than Meets the Eye

With Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and the abundant other resorts located within a couple of hours of Park City, there’s no shortage of places to ski. From the exclusive luxury experience you get at Deer Valley to the more family-fun vibes at PCMR, skiing here is not just an activity; it’s a lifestyle.

But what if we told you there are even more types of skiing than just the downhill variety? Mix things up and try these Park City winter activities today:

  • Nordic Skiing is more about taking in the scenery than enjoying the thrill of the descent. Nordic skis are longer than downhill skis with free heel bindings, allowing the skier to move forward across long distances. There are two main types of Nordic skiing: classic, which involves groomed trails with parallel tracks, or skate skiing, which feels a bit more like skating on groomed trails. We love White Pine Touring for their amazing daily groomed trails, Nordic ski lessons, rentals, and more! Round Valley is also worth checking out for miles of beautifully groomed trails!
  • There’s also backcountry skiing, which is an adventure in and of itself on off-piste trails where you make your own way.
  • Did you know you can ski uphill? Park City Mountain Resort offers nighttime uphill skiing from about 6 pm – 8 am. It’s a great workout and an even better idea for a unique date night! Essentially, you hike up the mountain and then ski down once you reach the summit, bypassing the need for a lift. If you’re looking for an exciting challenge that culminates in breathtaking vistas followed by a smooth descent, give uphill skiing a try!
  • Skijoring combines the spectacle of a rodeo with the skill and precision of skiing. Skiers are pulled by a person on horseback through courses that feature obstacles like gates and jumps. The races are timed, and things can get pretty competitive. If skijoring sounds a bit too high-risk for your liking, you can always spectate an event. Learn more about skijoring and get tickets at Skijoring Utah.

Go to the Park City Ice Arena to Sled (Yes, You Heard Correctly!)

While skating might be the obvious way to enjoy a hockey rink, we also love bringing the kids for a sledding adventure. There is a perfect sledding hill just outside the arena. This free activity is a great way to spend the afternoon, and with ample free parking, it’s also one of the easiest ways to spend the afternoon. Trust us, your kids will love the thrill of sledding at the arena, and many happy memories will be made!

While You’re At the Arena…

We can’t mention the Park City Ice Arena without talking about skating. This olympic-sized ice sheet is open year-round, offering affordable skate rentals, group lessons, private lessons, and more. Have you always wanted to try speed skating? Do you want to brush up on your figure skating skills? Looking for a game of pickup hockey? The Park City Ice Arena is a true gem in the community. It’s a great place to enjoy ice sports, even curling!

You Can Bike All Year Long in Park City

A newer sport, fat tire snow biking, is all the rage right now! Involving special bikes designed to accommodate fat tires with widths ranging from 3.5″ to over 5″, winter biking is a great way to enjoy Park City’s endless single track trails all year long. The best part? It’s relatively low risk! Falling off your bike in the summer results in scrapes and bruises; in the winter, you’re falling into a deep pile of soft snow – nature’s cushion! You can find fat bike rentals at shops like Cole Sport, Jans, and White Pine Touring.

Experience the Thrill of Tubing

Perhaps not as refined or historic as skiing in Park City, we can’t have a list about winter fun without including tubing. For kids and kids-at-heart, it’s a hilarious joy to experience. Whether you’re sliding down the tubing lanes at Park City Mountain Resort or you’re taking a more extreme approach at Woodward, tubing is a great way to enjoy the afternoon.

You can also find tubing at Soldier Hollow Nordic Park along with a ton of other fun winter activities!

Looking for An Adventure Off the Beaten Path? Try Snowmobiling!

Park City’s seemingly never-ending wilderness is truly a thing to behold. There’s only so much you can see in a day on foot or by bike. We love taking advantage of the snowmobile rentals and tours at Daniels Summit Lodge. With options to book guided tours or private excursions, for a full-day, half-day or even a two-hour break, these snowmobile adventures are great for everyone!
