A History of Luxury Hotels and Residences in Deer Valley

May 5th, 2026 | Resorts

Deer Valley is synonymous with luxury.

First opening in 1981, Deer Valley Resort was the first of its kind – a ski resort that focused on providing an immersive, ultra-luxurious experience that surpassed expectations even when visitors were off the slopes.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the resort was further developed, growing rapidly with new infrastructure, including premier lodging and dining. In this golden era, Deer Valley Resort was truly transformed into what it is today.

As a top luxury ski destination, Deer Valley and Park City attracted (and continue to attract) some of the finest brands in the world.

Chin Fleming Harris Luxury Resort Real Estate has been here since the beginning, and our team has had a hand in shaping the Deer Valley we know and love today.

In this post, we’re taking a look back at the history of Park City and Deer Valley’s most iconic flags. Let’s dive in!

The Original Three

Deer Valley and Park City are home to some of the best hotel brands in the world. But before the area was renowned for its exemplary lodging, there were three primary hotels that led the way.

Stein Eriksen Lodge

Named after the iconic Olympic gold medalist and one of the most famous skiers in the world, Stein Eriksen, the lodge was the first luxury brand in Park City, and it continues to be one of the most exquisite. Although it is the smallest of the big three original legacy hotels, the Stein Eriksen Lodge remains one of the most sought-after hotels in the region.

Associate Broker Judy Glauser knew Stein well and skied with him for two years when Deer Valley was being developed. “Stein had panache,” she says. “He was an amazing human being, and skiing in the dust of his turns is an experience I won’t forget.”

Since then, offshoots have been developed, including the Stein Eriksen Residences. Our very own Steve Chin, had a hand in its creation. When the developer was looking for a flag for the development, it was Steve who introduced them to the CEO of the Stein Collection.

Today,Chin Fleming Harris Luxury Resort Real Estate has satellite offices at the Stein Eriksen Residences and at the St. Regis.

St. Regis Deer Valley

Around the same time, Senior Partner Suzanne Harris was collaborating with the developer of what would become the St. Regis Deer Valley. “They spent a lot of time thinking about which brand they would choose for the development,” says Suzanne, “Ultimately, they went with St. Regis because it was most organically tied to the environment.”

This decision was brilliant on the developer’s part because the St. Regis brand is known for integrating its properties into the environment, something that can’t be overlooked for a slope-side hotel.

The St. Regis remains one of the most iconic ultra-luxury properties in Deer Valley and is known for its amazing spa, incredible dining, and other exclusive amenities and traditions (like the daily champagne sabering at the St. Regis Bar!)

The Montage Deer Valley

Montage is an iconic ultra-luxury brand and the largest of the three original hotels in Deer Valley. Upon its inception, the goal was to build eight hotels that surpassed traditional four- or five-star ratings.

The Montage Deer Valley is located at the top of the mountain, at Empire Pass, making it a highly sought-after place to start and finish your ski day.

Today, the Montage brand has exceeded its goal of eight luxury hotels, with iconic properties all around the world and sister flags like the boutique Pendry Hotels & Resorts.
