Why Moab is Park City’s Shoulder Season Destination

March 4th, 2024 | Resorts

The main reason to live in Park City is hands-down the recreation. We like to think of Park City as a year-round destination for outdoor fun. With skiing, hiking, biking, golf, and more, there is always something to do in Park City, no matter what season we’re in.

Living in such an interesting and dynamic place, you may wonder why anyone would ever leave. But a change of scenery is sometimes a good thing, there’s a reason why Moab, Utah is one of the top choices for Park City residents looking for a getaway.

The Winters Here are Long Compared to Moab

Park City has a diverse climate with clearly defined spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons. With 5-6 months worth of skiing, we can’t blame you if you start to long for those warm summer days after a while.

Moab is only a short four-hour drive away, but the climate could not be more different. Moab is a desert and by early April, it’s normal to experience lovely, warm temperatures. Imagine, leaving Park City covered in snow and ending up in Moab where you can comfortably sit outside in shorts and sandals. It’s the perfect reprieve from the long Park City winter.

Due to its desert climate, Moab never truly feels cold or uncomfortably hot. The temperatures feel dry and moderate, and the area only receives snow on rare occasions.

Moab is a Mecca for Outdoor Recreation

Both Moab and Park City share a similar vibe. They are immensely popular among a specific type of person, namely, the type of people who love spending time recreating outdoors. Park City is famous for world-class ski runs, spectacular mountain views, and hiking or biking trails that traverse wooded forests, great plains, and mountain ridges.

Moab on the other hand is a true outdoor recreation mecca for everyone. One of the biggest draws of spending time outdoors in Moab is the scenery. There are countless beautiful trails for hikers, incredible mountain biking and river rafting for adrenaline seekers, and even spectacular driving and boating options perfect for people who like to enjoy stunning landscapes.

Whether your party is young, old, or differently-abled, there is something in Moab for you.

Moab is Off the Beaten Path

Most people are aware of ‘funky’ cities with unique local vibes. Think Austin, Texas with its ‘Keep Austin Weird’ campaign. Moab feels a bit similar in that you will be hard-pressed to find many strip malls or franchise restaurants in the area.

Moab is distinctly local with an unmatched small-town ambiance. Everything here feels purposeful, historic, and special. You’ll find funky shops next to locally-owned restaurants all with a unique perspective and exciting offerings.

Did We Mention it Was Scenic?

Not much will prepare you for the sheer spectacle that is the landscape surrounding Moab.

Even just getting there is a treat. When you leave Park City, you’ll experience a stunning, scenic drive that is only a small precursor to the wonderful sights you’re about to take in. Moab is surrounded by protected land including the iconic Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and state parks including the Sand Flats Recreation Area and Dead Horse Point State Park

Did you know? CMFH is working with the Lionsback Resort in Moab, Utah, which is located right outside the Sand Flats Recreation Area. Learn more about the development right here.

History is all around Moab too. Whether you’re interested in taking in ancient cliff dwellings or you’d like to learn more about the Native American history of Moab, you will find ample archeological items and museums dedicated to the area’s history.

You’re Surrounded by Water, Even in the Desert

When we say Moab is a desert climate, you probably imagine very little water running through the area. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Moab is surrounded by some of the most beautiful swells of water in the world. From fishing in the Colorado River to kayaking in the Green or San Juan River, or rafting the iconic Cataract Canyon, there is an abundance of watersports available in Moab.
