How to Prepare for Ski Season in Park City

October 23rd, 2023 | Park City Community

Whether you wish it could be summer forever, or you’re already counting down the days until the first snowfall, winter in Park City is on its way. And with winter comes ski season.

We can’t wait for downhill runs, making new friends on chairlifts, and enjoying an apres at the bar. Here at CMFH, we love ski season.

Park City is one of the top destinations in the world for skiing, and for good reason. Our slopes are renowned, our amenities are world-class, and the city-wide ambiance simply can’t be beaten.

If you’re new to the area, you might be wondering what you need to do to get ready for ski season in Park City. Keep reading to find out.

Get Your Car Ready

Ok, cars aren’t really necessary for skiing in Park City, but as any local will tell you, our winters can be brutal. And who wants to spend precious slope time at the mechanic getting your car fixed? Or worse, who wants to get stuck in the snow with your tires spinning?

Getting your car serviced ahead of winter is always a good idea. Between installing your winter tires and making sure your windshield washing fluid is rated for colder temperatures, these small tasks should be done ahead of the first snowfall if you want to save time and hassle.

Get Your Home Ready

We’ve written about it in the past, but Park City winters can be hard on your home! The months of cold temperatures combined with significant snowfall require unique home maintenance that you may or may not be used to.

In addition to home maintenance, you also have to consider snow removal. On average, Park City can get anywhere from 300-400 inches of snow per year. The idea of shoveling that much snow should be enough incentive to get your snowblower serviced before the weather turns.

If you don’t have a snowblower and prefer to outsource your snow removal, we recommend you get on that sooner rather than later. Snow removal companies are usually capped with the number of homes they can service, so it’s best to get in early.

Looking for low-maintenance living in Park City? Here are a few reasons why buying a luxury condo in Park City might be right for you.

Purchase Your Ski Passes

There are plenty of options for getting ski passes in Park City, but no matter what type of pass you’re looking for, it’s essential to plan ahead and get it early.

Day passes can be quite expensive, but if you purchase them in advance, they will typically be cheaper. If you’re planning to ski during any “peak times” such as the Christmas Holidays or President’s Week, you will want to book well in advance–this goes for visitors and locals alike!

Do you want to enroll your children in ski school? The time to get registered is upon us. Enroll as soon as possible, as spaces are limited.

You can get passes for Deer Valley at deervalley.com or Park City passes at parkcitymountain.com.

Invest in Some Ski Conditioning Classes

Even if you only ski recreationally, we recommend investing in some ski conditioning ahead of the season. People in Park City tend to already live fairly active lives, spending the summers mountain biking and hiking, but these activities are very different from skiing.

Participating in some ski conditioning classes will ensure your body is in tip-top shape for ski season. The workouts typically focus on lower body and core strength to protect your hamstrings, glutes, and quads. They help prevent injury and also focus on cardiovascular health so you can ski all day with minimal recovery needed.

Most experts recommend starting ski conditioning within 3-8 weeks before ski season begins.

Get Your Skis Shined Up

Getting your skis serviced early on is essential to starting ski season the right way. The closer we get to opening day, the busier the shops will be. We recommend getting your skis serviced as soon as you can.

Prepare for Tourist Season

If you live in Park City year-round, you might be surprised to see just how busy the area becomes during ski season. While we love how vibrant and exciting winter is for tourism in PC, there are a few tips we have for surviving the ski season as a local.

Make your dinner reservations nice and early. With more people in town, restaurants are going to be busier, and it might be a bit more challenging to get a last-minute reso on a Friday night.

Prepare for busier traffic. Many Park City locals opt for public transit during ski season because the roads can get a little congested during rush hour.

However, we have a trick for beating rush hour traffic: extend the apres. There are very few places in the world where you can wait for traffic to clear up with a luxurious hot cocoa in front of a fire with mountain views.
