As you can see from the image above, we loved hosting the Games back in the day. That’s our very own Steve Chin and Dena Fleming enjoying the festivities!

It’s Olympic Season and here in Park City, we’re buzzing! Haley Batten, a professional mountain biker and Park City local earned a silver medal, and the IOC just announced Salt Lake City as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympics!

When Were the Olympic Games Last Held in Salt Lake City?

The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City with numerous events happening at venues across the area. Although it was quite soon after 9/11 and the city had even more security precautions than usual, it was a remarkable moment in history when everyone came together to celebrate sport.

Why Was Salt Lake City Chosen for the 2034 Winter Olympics?

In truth, there are not many candidates for the Winter Olympics anymore. The IOC now requires cities to already have the infrastructure or at least a mountain to host the Winter Olympics. Here in Park City and Salt Lake City, we have the infrastructure. Our venues from 2002 are frequently used by athletes for training to this day.

We haven’t just ‘maintained’ our Olympic venues either, but rather they have been improved over the past 22 years since the the last time the Winter Games were held here.

Winter in Park City simply can’t be beat. Here’s how to prepare for ski season in Park City right here.

What is it Like in Park City During the Olympics?

In one word: electric! Here at CMFH, we can confidently say that the 2002 Winter Olympics was the most exciting two weeks we’ve ever seen in Park City, which is a lot coming from a town with a full annual calendar of amazing events and festivals.

The energy level in town is phenomenal, with athletes and spectators walking the streets. Expect to see a wave of pins, berets, and Olympic attire from all over the world. You might even see a comeback of the iconic Salt Lake City 2002 Green Jell-O Pins!

Winter is our peak tourist season, but everything is just bumped up a few extra notches during the Olympics. The overall ambiance in town is that of one big party. In a town where people from all walks of life are embraced, it’s truly spectacular to see how Park City is enjoyed by an international audience.

Do the Olympics Impact Park City Real Estate?

Park City is perpetually sought-after. As a fantastic ski resort destination with year-round recreating available, it draws people who enjoy the finer things in life and who want to live close to nature and enjoy the outdoors. It’s a world-famous destination in its own right, but the Olympics boost its appeal by shining an international spotlight on our amazing city.

With international exposure, we should see more people discover Park City and learn about our incredible quality of life. In 2034, everyone in the world will have their eyes on Park City!

From a real estate perspective, it’s difficult to predict what hosting the Olympics will do to the local market. In 2002, the market saw a slight boost maybe 1-2 years after the event, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for changes to the market this time around!
